The Mince

Ingredients - Mince (makes 6lbs)

🍏 Bramley (or any tart green) Apples. 1lb (450g) 🍯 Soft Dark Brown Sugar. 12oz (350g)
🧈 Shredded Suet (shortening). Beef or vegetarian. 8oz (225g). 🍊Oranges. Grated zest and juice of 2
🍇 Raisins. 12oz (350g) 🍋 Lemon. Grated zest and juice of 2
🍇Sultanas. 8oz (225g) 🥜 Almonds. Slivers. 2oz (50g)
🍇Currants. 8oz (225g) 🌶️ Mixed ground spice. 4 tsp
🍊 Mixed (candied) peel. 8oz (225g) 🥜 Nutmeg, Grated
🥃 Bourbon, Whisky or Brandy. 6 tbsp.

Substitutes

Method

  1. Mix all of the ingredients together except the alcohol.
  2. Cover and leave in a cool place for 12 hours.
  3. Bake, covered, for 3 hours at 225f/120c.
  4. Let it cool and stir occasionally.
  5. Add the alcohol, final mix, then store in jars.
  6. For a richer, deeper and more adult flavor. Feed the jars with a tablespoon of your alcohol once every week or two.
